Protein skimmer dilemma

Hey guys I have a little problem, I just cam back from seeing my cabinet maker, and my stand will be 27.5 inches in the inside, I was planning on getting a ASM g4x but the skimmer is 30" tall, so that is out of the question. what should I do??? Does anyone know anything about the aquamedic shorty 5000? I know it was in a TOTM in 2003, but besides that it doesn't seem to be very popular, I do not have that many options it cannot be external, the stand cannot be taller, and I do not have a fish room , so please help me out before I spent 500.00 on a skimmer that I'm not even sure of. thanks a million in advance

Why not get the G4 plus? It's only 24 inches tall..

Would you say that the asm g4 is better than the shorty 5000?

I would say yes but that wouldn't be fair since I haven't had any experience with the shorty 5000. However, my G3 does a wonderful job on my 120 gallon mixed setup. The G4 plus comes with the sedra 9000.

Hey it's you again, BTW i know i love ASM g2 on my 50g, but i just wondered about the 500-600 dollar shorty, know what i mean

I hear ya...no experience with those......however, I have heard very good things about the products at my reef creations.com, really good recirc skimmers - dont know the stats on size though. I think they do custom work as well.

I just looked at the shortys - can't beat those Eheim pumps. Looks like a good unit. Just wondering though, isn't taller better when it comes to skimmers? Looks like alot of the height in the unit is the collection cup?

well the shorty comes in 25 and 29" and the MRC skimmers require some pretty big pumps so i wasn't even considerin those, but they look great, i think i'll go with the G4plus, best bang for my buck!

Have you done any mods on your G2. Debating on whether or not it actually needs any mods.

yeah i did the direct feed, the recirc, and the gate valve, if anything the most useful is the gatevalve mod, but i like them all and they are cheap
