Protein skimmer for JBJ 28g nano

So I'm getting ready to set up my first tank. I was talking to a 28 year hobbyist and he said I should absolutely get a protein skimmer before I cycle the tank. He recommended a seaclone but I saw mixed reviews. Anyone know what I should do?

Find a new friend :lolspin: j/k
Seaclone is basically junk..

For a smaller HOB skimmer look at Reef Octopus, Eshopps PSK-75H, or Aquamax HOB-1 I think..
I have the eshopps and LOVE it..

In general though.. For small tanks.. many get buy with water changes alone and no "fancy" skimmers/reactors,etc...

I'm running the aquamaxx, and love it, takes some adjusting like all skimmers, but it works well, and pulls a lot of skimmate.

I was gonna get the aquamaxx ws-1, butI don't think it will fit. The HOB is a little pricey.

This guy told me to mix my own saltwater since I'm 30 miles from my nearest LFS. He suggested an anemone to start, then coral, then fish. Another buddy said fish first. Both have years in the hobby. Seems like there are a lot of opinions on how to do things in the hobby. I can't figure out who to listen to.

Do NOT get an anemone. They are on the advanced side of the hobby and should not be kept until you have good lighting, understand your water chemistry and have an idea on how keep it the same from week to week. This is one of the last things people put in the tank not the first.

I think it's a common thing for stores to say that, I bought an established tank from a new aquarist, it had fish and a magnificent nem, and fish. I removed it as soon as I got it home, and got it to someone with a more established tank, the aquamaxx fits my jbj 29 just fine, only thing removed was part of the tubing for the out flow on it, just one of the joints pulled and was a perfect fit, as to what first, I see a lot add fish first, after it's been established for several months to a year then add coral, I've read others add all together in a timely manner, and some who have added coral then fish.

You have the WS-1 or the HOB? The WS-1 is not hang on the back

Yeah the advice I got didn't seem to go with what I have read.

I've had a Tunze 9002 with a custom cup from inTank on my JBJ 28G for the past five years and it has served me very well. It just needs a thorough cleaning every six months or so to keep the foam production going. Very quiet as well.

It's discontinued, but it looks like you can pick one up from eBay.

Do any of these fit inside the sump of the 28 jbj? I'm looking as well but don't want anything hanging off the back.

Yes, the Tunze 9002 fits perfectly in the middle chamber... but you have to cut off the magnet on the side, which was pretty easy. You also have to either use a custom cup or modify the hood because the hood gets in the way of the huge stock cup.

Let me know if you're interested, I can post a pic when I get home later.

If you don't mind that would be great. Though I am considering putting chaeto in the middle chamber with a light. I'm using the stock protein skimmer in the left of middle chamber currently. I just can't seem to get it set up correctly and either get the cup full of water or full of dry foam :(

Excuse my mess. The first pic shows how it looks from the back. Second pic is the skimmer out of the water to show where I cut out the magnet. Third pic shows it from the top with the cup off.

Smaller skimmers tend to be finicky to set up. Even with mine, there's only about a two-rotation difference between no foam at all and overflowing. But once it's set right, I find that I just have to increase the knob very slightly every couple of weeks to keep the foam going. Every six months or so, I take it apart for a cleaning and I decrease the knob and start again.

Aside from the foam production cutting out every six months or so, it's worked great and is very quiet. If you end up with this skimmer, you can PM if you need any specific advice.

Wow, thank you for the great reply. Looks like it will pass the wife test. Now I'm just wondering if the section to the side of the center section would be good enough to house chaeto. Obviously it is much smaller. Hope the chaeto won't pop out the top and go to the pump chamber!
