Protein Skimmer in Sump?

I set up a new 90G tank with a sump. All the plumbing below has been working for over a week now, but I have done nothing but fight with the skimmer in the sump. I first tried using my reef octopus hang on because it was expensive, but it was too big. The tank came with a Coral Life 125G I believe. Hang on or in sump. I have tried numerous pumps and things to get it to work. The latest is a RIO 1400, which does fine pumping the water through, my question is, where does the air line go? I have the line from the pump going to the small little canister on the skimmer as the instructions say. There is another nipple for air above the return line, which I believe isnt used? The problem I am having, is the air line just sucks up water, fill up the little canister and comes out the other nipple on the canister. For the life of me I can't get bubbles or foam out of this. Its gotten very frustrating. Poor fish have had no skimming!

The air line just sits up in the air. You can hang it over the back of the sump. Do this so it can suck air and not water then it will work

Yeah I have read the instructions many times, it doesn't say much about the tube. The silencer sits up high on the Skimmer, then I have the air line running down to the pump. Maybe don't connect it to the skimmer at all, and just let the air tube hang over the side like he mentioned directly from the pump. That might work, I wouldn't be using the air silencer on the skimmer then. Anything to get this thing to skim and start to foam.
