Do you nned to have a protein skimmer on a mantis tank or not? I am in the process of setting up a eclipse 6 gallon acrylic tank for a mantis and wondered if I need one?

Thanks in advance.

I am new to this board, but we have had a reef tank for over a year now and it's time to set up a little mantis tank.

I have a ten gallon mantis tank. I just use a hang on filter. He has been in the tank for several months and seems happy. He comes out and takes raw shrimp from my fingers. I usually change 25% of the water a week using water from my 125 to replace it when I am doing a water change on the 125. He shares the tank with a bright red crab that hitchiked in my TBS rock and a large snail he hasn't bothered yet.

Well . . . you should build the tank to suit the animal.

So I guess the question is now, what kind of mantis are you putting in there?

Dexter1334,

I just evicted my mantis from the TBS package I completed a few weeks ago. I too have him in a ten gallon with a 2lb chunk of liverock and 1/2" of live sand. I have a hang-on power filter with no media in it, mostly for circulation. Do you think I should put any type of filtration in there or will water changes suffice?

Typically mantis shrimp are pretty tolerant of less than pristine water conditions. That said, we should still strive for the optimum environment for our animals. Water changes should suffice unless you have an unusually large mantis and tend to overfeed.

Terry,

I would put maybe some media without any activated charcoal or anything in the filter so copepods and stuff can live there and multiply even faster. The pods really help break down all the chunks of stuff the mantis misses. Other than that it sounds fine. Maybe somemore rock but that's a personal call. :)
