protein skimmer question

i am looking to buy a protein skimmer for my 30 gallon and was wondering anyones opinion on the SeaClone 100 made by Istant Ocean. I know its not hardly a wonderful skimmer but in my price range it is one i have seen at a few local shops and most references say it would serve fine in a tank my size. anyone have any better solutions around the same price give or take 50 or so $$$$? I would appreciate any help!

I would take the $50 and buy a straw and just blow bubbles in your tank, you'd probably have about $49.95 left over and the straw would probably produce better results than the SeaClone.

Get an AquaC Remora w/the MJ1200.

I had the Seaclone150 on my 46 and never got it to work that well. Your best bet would be to do some research on Hang-On skimmers and find a good used one. You might spend spend a little more, but you'll be a lot happier in the long run.


FWIW - I have an AquaC Remora Pro with the Mag3 and surface skimmer box for $150 OBO

i switched to a remora with a maxi jet 1200 on my 29 gallon. im extremely impressed. it pulls some narsty crap out. its worth every penny. seaclone=pos. spend the dough on skimmer and lights. this hobby isnt cheap. and if you go cheap, you will be sadly frustrated.

I was going to mention also I've heard good things about the Coralife Super Skimmer. It's not as compact and looks way more complicated than the Remora or Remora Pro. I have a Remora on my 55 and I fill about 1/5 of the collection cup per day. AquaC has the simplest design, easy to clean, easy to setup, don't have to mess w/them either.

SeaClones are legendarily bad as skimmers on ReefCentral - I've never used them but they are small and need modification to really do much of anything from what I've read.

My recommendations:
1) Coralife Super Skimmer (make sure you read the posts about trimming the outflow tube as otherwise it may have a tendency to flood; otherwise a very good skimmer)
2) Octopus brand hanging needlewheel skimmer (very new, I've only seen one recommendation but it was good. Looks like CPR's BakPak but I think uses a needlewheel so is significantly more efficient)
3) Remora or Remora Pro (some people like, some don't, but a reasonable choice)

I have (had) the Octopus and have some issues with overflowing. First off the venturi nipple (on arrival, which I thought was suppose to be that way) was broken so a snail or something caused the air line to come off the pump which caused the first overflow. Then after fixing it at the suggestion of Coralvue (the distributor) the orings would not stop leaking. I asked them to trade my 2 month olds skimmer for an insump model since I no longer trusted its design, and they refused saying that they have sold thousands and not one person has had problems. Basically, David from coralvue does not stand behind their products and I will never buy something that that company distributes again.

I second the AquaC Remora suggestion. I have had one for a WHILE and it's a GREAT skimmer. The SeaClones... I'd stay away from.

just to give you an idea of what you'd get if you went w/a Seaclone........I was dumb once and bought one when I first started. It will basically make a little tornado inside the reaction chamber and make no bubbles, it's interesting to look at but far from ideal for skimming. I think I'd get about 1/2 the collection cup full per month. I went back to my airstone skimmer and that $25 petco purchase made the seaclone look like a fancy water tornado peice of art. Do yourself a favor and save your money for any skimmer mentioned above other than the seaclone, you'll thank yourself when you're actually pulling gunk out of your tank vs. watching the amazing water tornado display.

sea clones work great... for about 5 minutes after you adjust them...
so if you can be there to tweek it every few minutes then by all means use it

It works alright but you have to replace the pump every 6 months or so, the loss in performance makes the seaclone inoperative after a short while. I have a coralife needle wheel super skimmer, 2 years and counting still pumping out that juice!!!

...depending on your intended bioload you can run a 30 gallon like a nano: more rock and some marco with no skimmer.

Thats my two cents, unless your willing to pay more money for a different skimmer.

I'd rather you spend the $50 on a lap dance and some beer vs. a seaclone. If anyone buys a seaclone after joining Reefcentral, they should only be using it for a media reactor, which works quite well, from what I'm told

Go for an AquaC Remora. I have the Pro version and it works beautifully.

I am happy with my AquaC Remora. I was choosing between between that and the Backpack 2R+... didn't consider the SeaClone after all the complaints I have heard on here.
