Protein Skimmer Question

Hey guys, i have added a refugium almost a year ago and had to get rid of my nice EuroReef skimmer because it was just too large to put in my new refugium. I have been using a cheesy Coralife protien skimmer since thats the only kind that seems to fit and was traded for my old light fixture. anyway i think i could be skimming much more and am wondering if they make protein skimmers i can put outside the water next to the refugium. can anyone recommend a particular brand. i am running a 90 gal tank that needs skimming.

Jay,

You are going to get many different opinions. However, in the tank skimmers are usually much better than HOB (hang on back) skimmers. Many people loved the brand that you had (EuroReef), however, am not familiar if they have an HOB.

If there is any way, you can still have an in-sump skimmer that would be the first choice.

As far as HOB, I like mine. Aqua-C Remora Pro. There will be some that love this model and others that hate it. So that is how it probably will be (mixed reviews for many products). As far as the Aqua-C, I would get the biggest pump for which ever model you have. When I upgraded the pump, I got much better skim.

Again, there are many brands, and people will probably chime in with other favorites. Good luck.

PS. For me, I ended up returning 2 other models that I did not like, so you may want to make sure there is a good return policy.

Hope this helps.

which coralife skimmer do you have? Your best bet might be to see if anyone has come up with a mod for it..they mod EVERYTHING on RC...

HOB skimmers are fairly limited, i'm not aware of any particularly excellent ones...i've heard good things about the remora...you could look into the octopus...

here is a link about the deltec

well i definitely dont want a hang on back skimmer but i thought they made a skimmer that i can put the pump in the sump and the cylinder outside under my tank or something. maybe im crazy and it doesnt even exist but i seem to think ive seen pictures of other tanks that have extremely large skimmers working not being submerged in the sump. please advise

ah, well then you have a bunch of options...the aqua-c ev series could be used that way, most of them have a drain in the collection cup in case of overflow...the aqua-c has a gatevalve on the output to regulate your skimmate, it is threaded and could easily be plumbed back to the sump/fuge.....class is about to start...add more later if i can

Can you do a recirc and gate valve mod on any decent in sump skimmer and run it externally? If it is recirced the pump can be external and you can extend the exit pipe to reach to the sump with a gate valve mod, I think. The skimmer would just need a small feed pump.

just about any recirc skimmer can be run externally. I wouldn't feel comfortable using a skimmer that was modded as a recirc externally because there is too much potential for a leak being catastrophic. Euroreef makes some really nice recirc skimmers that can be use externally. Tony ar reefexotics also sell the MRC skimmers which are nice.

Lots of choices for external skimmers, great benefit to the recirculating skimmers is you can direct feed them from the drain so no need for an additional pump. I've used the MRC with great success and have read good things on the Reef Octopus, Aqua-C and Euro-Reef.

The Tunze 9010 would be a good choice if you stay in sump as well, very good skimmer with small foot print.

wow those skimmers are pricey. I guess its going to be harder than i thought. i just dont have enough room under my tank to put right size protein skimmer or might i say coulldnt get a larger sump so i could fit the skimmer i already purchased.

What's the budget?

I'm setting up an undrilled 75 reef and I plan on using the Octopus BH 300F. It has a small presence in the tank (pump is internal - only thing in tank is a small overflow box and output pipe), is quiet and is supposed to be one of the better HOBs.

i unfortunately just sold two models that would have worked for you...but they went for 100 and 150....so if you keep an eye on the for sale forum you could get lucky....figure out what you're looking for and then look for it...who knows, could get a nice deal

actually, i know chris...cb747 just got a new skimmer, i will find out what he had and if he's selling it...

think chris has an mrc skimmer that is run by his dart pump. i would send him a message or if i talk to him friday jay i'll ask him how much and give him your cell number if thats cool?

yeah ray give him my cell if you still have it otherwise pm me. I dont have a problem paying the few hundred but for some reason i saw prices around 1,200 for recirc skimmers.

Jay give me a ring sometime tommorow. Ill let the skimmer go for the right price. Its an MRC 2 and it was powered by an PCX-40.

No such thing as overkill. Skimmers should be rated for at least 2x the volume of the tank. Also If you upgrade in the future you have a larger skimmer already.
