Protein Skimmers

I have a 65 gal aquarium that will have mostly plants and a few fans/soft coral and sponges. This will mainly be a sea horse aquarium. Any advice on protein skimmers? I'd prefer something small so it won't take up too much space. I currently have 2 hang on the side waterfall type filters with the white rock bio media in the nets. I am trying to get the tank established with any extras before I bring in the seahorses. So I am still building my living rock wall etc.

I have seen some of the small protein skimmers that suction to the side of the tank. Would one of those work? Also have an air pump on the way to add O2 to the tank since I plan on having more plants than anything else.

I'm a big fan of the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 Hang-on-the-Back, if you need to go HOB. As long as you're not packing the aquarium full of fish, you should be fine with the 1000 on the 65.

I really don't have any room for it to hang off the back and would like for it to suction to the inside wall if possible. My tank is too close to my wall for anything other than the two simple filters I have on it already.

I'm using a Eshopps S120 and it is doing a fantastic job, I have a 100 Gallon Tank

for skimmers that are used in tank but decently lo-pro and effective I would do a TUNZE comline skimmer.

Are the cheaper brands not as effective or are these two much smaller than the cheaper brands?

I'd think that with the amount of waste produced by the feeding requirements of sea horses you would need a fairly oversized skimmer...

+1 agreed, dont skimp on the skimmer for sure

The skimmer I am looking at does 150 gallons. I have a 55 gallon tank. But it's a far cheaper skimmer than the ones listed here.

The lower profiles ones do only smaller tanks, I can understand why oversized is better, but was hoping that I wouldn't have to put out 200 bucks on a skimmer.

I went with the Tunze 9004 for my 40B office tank. The thing pulls all sorts of gunk out of the water plus has an inlet right at the surface to remove the oil slick. My only issue with it so far is that it pulls out so much gunk while I'm gone that it fills the cup over the weekend :lolspin:. Not a bad thing just have to keep on top of emptying the cup.
