I am (sorta) new at this. I had a 125 gallon saltwater tank about 10 years ago and had to get rid of it. I couldnt stay away so now i have a 55 gallon salt tank and want it to make a reef tank. How important is a protien skimmer and what brand or kind should I get? I do know it would need to hang on the back kind because I dont have a sump. Is there an inexpensive model that would or could work? Ive never used one before but i think I have the basic idea down mix air into the water and collect the bubbles right? Could someone please help me out here. Enlighten me with facts please. I want to learn all i can before i run out and buy one. thanks Bill

I have a seaclone 100 on my 75 gal- I am more then impressed with it. It gets the job done. Most people think that you have to spend $200 plus on a skimmer for it to be good.

Wrong section of the Forum :)

It is best to get a sump model because they pull out the most stuff. There are many brands, but cheapest with good review is the Coralife Super SKimmer.

I know you said you want a hang on, so you may want a Remora.

However, most people will agree that a sump skimmer is better.

Skimmer is very important, unless you do a huge water change every other week.

yes- the seaclone is a hang on back model- and comes with a maxijet 1200 power head. Its kept my water pretty clean.
