PSU REEFER'S 500g peninsula

PSU REEFER

New member
Well I'm finally going to start my offical build thread eventhough it actually started this past summer. I just recently learned how to post pics so please bare with me. I've been doing SW for alittle over 3 years now and this is my 3rd tank. 1st was a 150g tall, then was a 150g regular, and now my 500g. I've been very limited in keeping corals as I've mainly only have had LPS. My new tank I'm going to be a mixed reef so I'm excited to be getting into SPS.

Here are some pics of the beginning as I took out all my carpet in my basement and put down tile. 1st time tiling and I'm very pleased w/ the outcome but what a pain in the @@s.

Here a pic of the fishroom where almost all the equipment is. If I remember right it is about 8' x 6'. Wish it were alittle bigger but its better then nothing.

Here a few pics of my 1st 150g when it had FW cichlids in it. This is the same spot where the current tank is. I can't seem to find any pics of it being setup as a SW tank:(

Man was that tank so easy to maintain as FW.

Here's a few of my 2nd SW tank the 150g regular.

I had no idea that those brown poly's would take over everything at the time. Think I have them somewhat under control in the new tank as I've isolated them to two rocks that are by themselves. Had to do some chiseling of some of the rocks when I moved them over and every once in awhile alittle will pop up that I have to chisel away. Dam ugly poly's

Fresh water may be easy and comfortable. But as we all can contest to one time or another. Saltwater is uncomfortable at first. But if you do uncomfortable enough it becomes comfortable and nothing compares to that. JM2C

Well here goes the equipment list:

Tank--Bought used from a great guy in Ohio(thanks Norm)
Aquarium Obsessed 500 gallon custom glass tank
*30" high x 92" long x 36" to 44" deep front to back
*slightly tapered front as dimensions indicate
*drilled for closed loop - 2 draws in bottom, 4 returns in top
*built in overflow box
*drilled for return lines
*Loc-line returns with penductors
*drilled for (2) 2" drains w/ Dursos

Custom built stand (that Norm built)
*significantly overbuild stand for security
*Solid cherry façade & doors - natural finish
*starfish handles on doors
*inside cabinet painted and polyurethened for easy clean-up

Custom built canopy (again that Norm built)
*Solid cherry façade & doors - natural finish
*doors have removable highly relective panels
*inside painted white w/ polyurethene for maximum reflection

Don't know if Norm would/does custom work for others but if I lived anywhere near him I'd have him do my stand/canopy as its better then most of my area's "professional" builders.

Sump/Fuge--65g as it was bought before I had the tank and was going in the stand and this was biggest I could fit, but later found out once I started plumbing that it would fit so I put it in the fishroom directly behinf the wall the tank is against. I only had 4' so it worked

Skimmer--OCT 5000 ext. Reef Specialty rates it for 700g light bioload and 500g heavy bioload. Have been very impressed w/ it so far.

Plumbing---Return is going thru my manifold powered by a Hammerhead. The manifold right now is just running the skimmer and 2 returns. It will be running the chiller, frag tank, and denitrifier and whatever else. CL powered by the an Dolphin Ampmaster 3000/4000. Going w/ an OM 4-way that is drilled thru the top in the eurobracing. Also have 2 Tunze's 6100's going.

Lighting---4 - 400w lumenarc's w/ 10k EVC bulb's powered by icecap's. 2-660's VHO'S. 1-aquasun, 1-454, and 2 super actinic. Will change out the aquasun when it is time as it somehow overpowers the other 3. Might replace 1 or 2 of the 10k w/ 20k as its REALLY white.

Controller---RKE

RO/DI---AirWaterandIce 75g w/ boosterpump. Have 1 65g vat to store RO water and need another one but don't have the room so going to have to come up w/ something because making 30g of SW in a brute can is getting old. Also need to get a pump and plumb it all together w/ an ATO for top-off.

QT--have a 20g and 40 breeder to use depending on what fish I'm QT'ing. Plan is after all schooling fish are added (chromis & lyretails) I'll start w/ the wrasses and then the tangs. Hope to have somewhere around 40-50 fish.

Dosing---Drew's Dosers for Cal and Alk and I'll see about Mag.

Here's some pics of getting the tank in. The crating company did an outstanding job. The crate w/ the tank and canopy weighed 1700lbs and the crate w/ the stand weighed 700lbs. Wish I got pics of the crates coming off the truck as the tank crate looked as if it was housing a gorilla. This is what the tank and canopy came in:

Took 8 guys w/ sucken cups to lift the beast.

And the tank. We had alittle mishap in the moving it in the house as we had to set it down coming in the door which when we did we didn't put anything on the ground and there must have been a pebble on the ground because it spidered the corner which I thought ruined the tank but as it turns out we have fixed it. It in the corner w/ the overflow box so my LFS cut a piece of acylic to put in the corner of the overflow so no water touches that corner. Also got 2 other much smaller chips in the tank but everything is ok. AO build their tanks like a tank--thank god. Advise to others--if your going to move it yourself take your time and prepare or better yet hire some professionals

Let me start by saying GO COWBOYS! I had my 600g set up as FW but it wasnt cutting it for me. Once you go SW its hard to do FW. Looks like youre all set. Have fun.

The Boys let us down last nite, but I like what Garrett doing w/ the team. Yeah I did FW for 10yrs and once I got into SW I've never looked back.

Next up was do get some of the plumbing done. As you can see I didn't have alot of room under the tank so the sump/fuge went in the fishroom which now I'm happy it worked out that way, just wish I could/would have went bigger. I put a BV in the CL circuit for making water changes easier so that I can just run a hose outside since I don't have a drain to use in the basemant.

Here the manifold that will run the system. I now have a hammerhead running it and the Ampmaster for the CL

Did a FW test for 1 month to make sure all was good w/ the tank. Can't tell you how many time I got up thru-out those nites checking on the tank to make sure it wasn't leaking. So after all that was good I started fillin her up w/ RO/DI water. Took like 9 days.

Looking good Rob. Cant wait to see it in person. I have quite a few frags for you. Plan is to still get down this Sunday.

Congratulations on finally starting a build thread (and learning how to post pics...next thing you know, you will be texting!)

I have seen this tank in person and it looks GREAT!! Awesome job. Can't wait to see it fill in.
