Pulled the trigger....

Doug and other interested parties...

Well, I waited until the rumored announcement of the new 5d that was expected on the 22nd. When it didn't come I had to make a decision, upgrade the 30D to a 40D or get the old 5D.

Hmmm..... The 40D is a nice camera, but does it have $1050 worth of upgrades above the 30D. I decided it didn't and got the 5D with the 28-105L IS lens. Now I have a full frame. It'll be here Tuesday. Did I make the right decision?

Mike

You're going to fall in love with that the first time you look through the viewfinder.

Congrats

You made the right choice. I still have my old elan7, 35mm body. Whenever I put my lenses on that camera, I tell myself "Oh... this is what wide is supposed to look like." Imagine capturing an entire room in the viewfinder, without using a fisheye.

Some day I'll have a full frame. Some day.

I assume that you mean the 24-105

That's a nice lens that I've been considering. I just can't force myself to give up my 24-70, even though it just cost me $150 at the shop.

Yeah nice choice, I used to have the 24-105 and got some really nice and sharp pics off of it, sadly I havnt had the chance to use a 5D yet though.

:eek2: Wow please explain!?

Jeff.

No big deal Jeff, it just developed a focus problem that needed to be repaired. I can't complain as I bought the lens used to begin with so I'm still below retail on it.

Cheers

It is a hard choice between the 2 lenses if buying them alone. The 24-70 gives a 1 stop advantage but the 24-105 has IS. Personnally I think with the reported low noise at high ISO with the 5D, and a 2.8 f-stop, and low magnification one should be able to shoot with a high enough shutter speed so IS isn't necessary. I might have gone with the 24-70 myself, but with the 5D kit, it'a a no brainer. You get the lens for half the price of buying it separately.

Mike

Yeah I know Mike. I had a buddy buy that same kit and I was hoping to buy the lens from him. :)

I shoot landscapes from a tripod 99.999% of the time so I could care less about IS. It's the bokah from the 24-70 that I'm unwilling to give up.

And that was exactly what I like about the 24-70. But I have some backups. I have the 50 1.4, the 100mm 2.8 macro. So when I need the bokey, I should be able to get it. Am I going to need a better wide angle do you think or does the low end of the 24-105 get it?

I'm getting to be a snob and only buying L lenses these days. The 16-35 is supposed to be a heck of a lens, but $1500. Ouch. I'm kinda saving for the 500 f/4 but who knows if that'll happen. Once you actually see $5500 in your savings account its hard to send it away.

Mike

24 on the full frame gets you pretty wide. Depending on your shooting style that might be wide enough. On my crop body I used a Tokina 12-24 so that gave me an effective 18 on the wide end. I replaced it with a 17-40 f/4L and I really like it. I just can't justify paying double to get that extra 1mm. I'll back up a few steps if I have to. :)

I think that you can rent it, via rentglass.com, for about $30 a week if you wanted to try it out before you made a decision.

I went with the 24-70 as IS isn't particularly important in that range but doubling the amount of light is huge. Only one time in the last year have I even thought about missing it. Now with my 70-200 f/2.8 IS, I can't understand how 70-200 f/4s cope.
