Pulling the Trigger

Okay, so I am about to pull the trigger and buy myself a tank. I have a lead on a Oceanic 144 gallon half circle in my area that is second hand for a few hundred bucks. I will be able to see it with water in it with powerheads blowing, then again dry to check the seams for any peeling. The guy said I can back out any time and he'll understand.

Is this a good tank to start with as my first tank? I was initially thinking 120 to start, but this seems like it will give me a little room to grow and, if in good shape, will allow me to maybe go better quality on other items.

Thanks.

That's an odd size tank that may pose problems with lighting, covers and flow.
I agree that bigger is better, but IMO a standard shaped 125, 150 or 180 would be a better choice.

I agree unless your sold on that shape. since it is running I would pay close attention to how the lighting is set up, flow, tank covers and ease of maintenance. You may not be able to deviate much from the setup. Make sure it is something you can work with. Good luck

I have to agree with the others. Lighting would be a concern as well as the odd shape limiting the type of fish you can keep to a degree.

Thanks for the pointers guys. While the tank looked good and it was such a unique shape, I did decide against it. There were dead spots in he circulation... It actually just had sand in it, no rock, but there were spots on the sand that had junk sort of piled up in them and he was pushing 2 Ecotech 40's. I passed. Looking at a standard rectangle this week maybe, with a custom stand and canopy.
