Pulsating Xenia

Standard 90 gallon is 24" tall. Yeah, you should be fine with a 4 bulb T5 and Xenia on the substrate. Like I said, I have a colony 30" down from a compact fluorescent fixture!

Pick a spot with lower flow. Not only will it help keep the Xenia from migrating too far, the Xenia will "pulse" or wave much better and with more frequency that way.

Will do. I have noticed that with mine up higher near the powerheads, I don't see the "pulsating" as much. I cant wait to get them their own little island and watch them grow. Mine are very small at the moment.

I have a very small colony myself, and I am keeping them isolated to their own little island towards the front of the tank.. they seem to be doing well, but that photo above of the stepping, that was really helpful! Awesome video btw.. =D

Is anyone doing well with xenia at higher temps? Mine was OK in the high 70s...at 80 it is not happy!

In my old tank, I ran VHOs and temps always stayed below 80. My Xenia did fine, but ever since upgrading to a bigger tank with MHs (and temps always between 80-82) the Xenia is literally taking over tank.

I bought a pulsating xenia this weekend at the LFS. After doing some reading I have learned that they grow very fast and can take over your tank. Is there any way to contain them? If i put a small cluster of rock in the sand (away from all my other rock) will that contain them to that area or can they move acoss the sand and get attached to my other rocks?

I will buy some too when that time comes.

This was my old tank...started as a single stalk and took over tank in 2-3 years...Kinda out of control to say the least but looked awesome with entire 75 gallons pulsing.

In almost every tank I've ever had that I put Xenia in, it propagated like crazy in the beginning but then always died off after awhile. My "pet theory" is that it uses up all the Iodide in the water to spread and my lax WCs can't keep up with replenishing it.

Wow, you're not kidding. It would look awesome with the whole tank pulsating, but nothing else will grow on the rocks. What did you do with the tank?

Graduated from college about 7 years ago and had to sell/give it away..Finally able now to get a tank going again

This stuff reminds me of the Trouble with Tribles StarTrek episode. It's all cute fun and games.....then the reality hits, they plan to dominate the tank. This stuff spreads like crazy, it hard to remove. I trim it back with a razor knife.

What the best way to down size it?
