i need sand for my tank and i read on another forum that you can use this pulverized lime stone for the base of a deep sand bed and top it of with live sand. any suggestion? the reason i ask is the cost.
Let me take a swing at it
limestone is calcite based, so composition-wise it is safe to use it.
for DSB you need fine particle sand so it has the most surface area for bacteria to colonize. I am not sure what pulverized means, but if it is fine enough, I don't see the reason for not using it.
BTW: where do you get pulverized lime stone?
I know people have used silica play sand successfuly (I've got it in my tank). It's not as white as I'd like, but no problems. I've also heard of folks using sandblasting sand. Grain size is the most critical requirement, but I don't have the exact sizes handy.
Seeding with a few pounds of live sand is good practice, as is layering it on top of the base sand.
