Moving on Up
I am having a problem with my little giant pump. When I unplug it for a water change it sometimes does not fire back up. I have to unplug and replug it several times then the pump will fire back up. These pumps are almost 2 years old......I took them all apart cleaned them and oiled them and still same problem. I called the technical support number for Franklin Electric the maker of the pumps. He told me I could replace the motor on that pump but the cost of the motor is almost the same as a new pump. So I am really not that happy with these pumps only lasting about 2 years.

The question is what pumps for returns does everyone find the most reliable? I need external pumps.

Thanks

I had similar problems with a submersible pump. I twas a Rio 2500. I replaced the impeller and it never happened again.

I would def check your impellar. It could be a bit bound up which may in turn cause your pump to overload (use more torque) more than its supposed to. It may have a safety built in or just a go/ no go circuit that if it senses to much voltage being used to start motor it shuts down. We use several 1/4 to 1 hp motors at work that have safties like this built in...(these are not aquarium motors and they pump oil instead of water)...each time you plug it in may jog the impellar enough so that the last time you plug it in its freed up....

The new Marineland pumps that look like gigantic Maxi Jets are good, too. Very quiet and very powerful for their size. Supposedly generate less heat as well.
