Pump for chiller?

lolgranny

The DQ King
Hey guys, i just got a new chiller (Pacific Coast Imports CL-280) Im wondering how i should hook the bad boy up. Im working with limited space in my sump so i was trying to avoid tossing another pump in there, but i think that might be my only choice. I have my return plumbed and there is no room for it on that side of the tank so i think putting a pump and running flex hose to it will be my only choice.

Now, imput for a pump.. It says min flow(300gph) and max flow(600gph)

MAG 5?
Eheim 1260?

or smaller ones?

I was thinking of setting it next to my stand and tossing the pump in the sump :lolspin: which will be no more then 2' of hose for intake / drain on it. its quite close

Thoughts?

Thanks all!

I am using a Water Blaster 2000,528gph/27 watts.Small,very quiet(main reason I purchased it).Not the cheapest option though

Sounds not a real issue, im thinking this Compact Eheim will be the best option.

oooo the joys of buying more things for the tank. :D

I'm a little confused. Is there any reason you can't just put it inline with your current plumbing? Is it that the chiller is going on the other side of the tank from your return plumbing and you don't want to extend your return plumbing that far? I have my chiller hooked up inline right before returning to the tank.

Ehiem is a real no brainer... remember that you will get some serious line loss going through the chiller and the hoses - stay on the high side and you will be fine. IMO.

Think the Eheim 2000 Compact+ Aquarium Pump 264-528GPH will be fine?

or

Eheim 3000 Compact+ Aquarium Pump 396-793GPH a better bet?

I have limited room, so the smaller the better to be honest. Ill be keeping the water about 78.5 and it normally sits there on a regular day except for the HOT ones where it gets to 83.

I have a Pacific Coast Imports CL-650 and even though it's rated for a pump no less than 500 gph, I run a Via Aqua 1300 (370 gph) and I'm getting quicker temp drop down than when I had it running on a larger pump. This pump is really quiet and cheap ($20 at F&S).

No kidding? Thats a wide spread. I figured it didnt NEED what it said, but i wanted to be safer then sorry. Happen to have a pic of how you have it all rigged up good sir?

not joking in the slightest when I say this but I have the exact same chiller and I use a maxi jet 1200 :) the chiller is level with the sump though so no real loss of presure. just make sure to keep the bugger clean.

Wooooow ragamuffin im impressed Haha. Mind shooting me over a pic? Mine would be level with the sump as well and would only be a foot away from the tank. Thanks!

Wow ragamuffin that's incredible lol. My chiller will be about a foot away from my sump and level with it so there shouldn't be much loss. Mind shooting me a pic so I can see how ya have it?
