Pump in the Dumps

The circuit in my study went off the other day and after playing around I figured out it was due to the pump on my skimmer. To test it more I plugged it into an outlet with a GFI and sure enough it tripped the GFI as well.

My question is: can this be fixed or do I need to buy a new pump?

My thinking is that it's related to the cord. Perhaps it got pulled some while I was moving things around or cleaning the skimmer as this happened just after a good cleaning.

Anyone had this happen?

I am waiting for it to dry before I really mess with it to much but so far I can't see a way into the unit. Electrical is the one DIY I am good at and if I can get into it I might be able to fix it if it's related to the cord like I think.

trash it and get a new pump. I had to do it with my Reef Octopus it was shorting out my system whenever I plugged my chiller in. I was praying it was a faulty heater but sadly it was the skimmer pump.

I got a potential serious shock from a bad Reef Octopus skimmer pump; not worth taking a chance!
Most of these pumps are filled and sealed with epoxy and are not internally serviceable and the cord goes directly into the epoxy.

RC and AA have pumps in stock. Call first to see if they have your model. Most LFS could order it for next day delivery.

RC has Sicce and Waterblaster pumps in stock, both would be very good options
Do they work with the Reef Octopus skimmer?

Save the impeller (if still in good condition) for backup parts.

Good suggestion. I am still pondering trying to fix it. If nothing else to squirt a bunch of aquarium silicone into the cord area to protect it. and keep water off of it.
