Pump Recommendations

Ok...using 2 Mag12s for my returns. I guess I'm going to try to plumb in my chiller by T-ing off my return, but I want to switch out the Mag12s for something else. Any recommendations for any submersible pumps that are energy efficient, yet have enough power to act as a return pump and pump to feed my chiller?

Setup: 115 gallon tank with center overflow
1 1/2" drain
2 returns thru the overflow (3/4" each)

Thought about plumbing the chiller thru the drainage, but not sure how all the air bubbles will affect the chiller performance.

2nd on the Quiet One.................I use a 4000 as my return pump on my 60 gallon & there's times I gotta check if it's still working because it's so quiet

Mine's not THAT quiet, but all the complaining I have done for the past years turns out to be because I had a crappy unit. So much for buying used, but I was under pressure because my old old pump had died.

A month ago my Quiet One 6000 died and I borrowed a spare unit from ReefMeister. Hmmm... this one doesn't run nearly so hot... and isn't nearly so loud... it did have a strange clickng noise, but was still a lot quieter than my old one. After a couple of weeks, the clicking noise went away.

$92 at Drs Foster & Smith for a new one, which is finally installed, and I hear a low hum from the other room but that's it.

I hearby officially take back anything deragatory I ever said about these pumps! Lots of bang for the buck, easy to clean, quiet and very energy efficient. ReefMeister says they use less electricity than they are rated for, and the rating are already pretty low.

And at >$100 each, you can get a third for backup, all for less than the price of one iwaki. I use my third QuietOne for water barrel duty until needed someday.

Quiet Ones don't look too bad. Ideally I'd like to get rid of both Mag12s and put one larger pump that will take care of both returns and feed the chiller and possibly calcium reactor. Think the Quiet One 9000 (2328 GPH) can handle all that?

If you need one single large submersible pump, then I'd say that's probably your best bet. Damn, at only 145 watts for nearly 2,400 gph, that's one hell-of-an-efficient pump! Just make sure you use 1-1/2" for both intake and return to maintain this rating.

You can easily T-off of your return line to feed the other two components. I'd use a 1-1/2" to 1/2" PVC "T" fitting to branch off for the chiller and regulate it via a 1/2" ball valve (unless the chiller has 3/4" plumbing of course) Then you can tap into the chiller line with another "T" to feed the calcium reactor; most likely standard 1/4" line.

When dealing with smaller 1/4" line, I prefer to drill and tap my own holes into any PVC fitting so I can add a quick connect (John Guest fitting)

Hrm...my returns are 3/4" each so gonna have to split down the 1½" to 2 x 3/4" I guess that's gonna greatly cut down the flow.

After drilling and tapping ur own holes, what do you use for connections? and where can I get em?

Well, you are actually splitting off a 1-1/2" return into 4 parts:
2 x 3/4" (main tank)
1 x 1/2" (chiller)
1 x 1/4" (calcium reactor)
so this should be perfect....no/little loss in efficiency

Double check the size of your intakes on both the chiller and calcium reactor. I was assuming those sizes.

Ok. I guess I'll go for the Quiet One 9000. Too bad MD doesn't have it in stock. Was gonna see if they'd price match it with Dr. Foster's so that I can just pick it up.
