Pump size for 30g long

does anyone think a MAG5 would be a good size pump for this size tank ? The return would be around 3.5' high (head?).

What size mag? The 3.5' headfeet is what will determine the size. Look for 4-8x tank turnover for waterflow depending on what is being stocked.

Sorry, didn't see you said Mag 5. I read MAGS.

Right now just fowlr, but maybe corals of some kind in the future.

If you want a CL system it will work as long as you use a few returns or spraybar type setup. Or you could use a wavemaker hooked to some powerheads to make up for some lost flow.
