Purple gorgonian dying?

I have it under good flow and under a 17watt T8.

It seems part has died, and the rest has stuff on it that I don't know if it should be there or not.

I've been spot feeding coral frenzy every few days, but not sure how well it works.

It came in a shell, I left it in that and just put the shell in the sand...

How do I make sure it is doing OK?

I was told the purple gorgonian only needs moderate light...

Will try trimming and keeping an eye on it..

I don't know if the "fluff" I see is aprt of the coral or something I should remove :|

Should I have taken it out of the shell?

Trim it and put it in higher flow. Mine is very temperamental and often shows no polyp extension unless it's windblown by a powerhead so I'd say pretty high flow. It should look fuzzy most days.

No need to trim the dead spots. Once the coral starts to regrow, it will grow much faster over the exposed gorgon material vs having to produce totally new growth. That most likely is a purple plume gorgonian. All photosynthetic gorgonians need fairly high light and high flow because of the type of environments where they are often collected from. You might also want to check your water parameters. Low alk and high phosphate can inhibit growth and polyp extension. Best of luck.
