Purple Hornets dropping like flies....

I acquired a frag of 15 polyps about 3 weeks ago. They have been doing great in my tank for the entire time I have had them, over the past few days they have started to disappear. I am now down to 9. The only thing I have done is I did a 10 gallon H20 change (with RO/DI H20)2 days before they started melting. Everything else is exactly the same. My tank is a 46 gal bowfront, my params are:

PH: 8.2
KH: 10 deg
Ammonia: 0
Phosphate: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
SG: 1.024
Ca: 475
They are under a 6x39W nova extreme with 2 ATI blue plus, @ ATI aquablue special, 1 KZ fiji purple, & 1 GE 6500K day bulb. I do not dose phyto, I do however feed cyclopeeze(which I see my other zoas & palys eating)2-3 times a week. Any thoughts on what I should do or be doing differently?

Are you sure they are purple hornets and not the African blues?

Those African blues melt faster than butter from what i've seen.

I had a feeling.

Unfortunately, i think you can kiss those goodbye. I bought a 10-12 head frag about a week or so ago and i think i'm down to 3 polyps now. All my other zoa's are perfect but those African blues just melted away:confused:

From everything i've heard, most others are experiencing the same so it probably isn't your tank just this wildcaught zoa doesn't like our tanks.

Put them on higher flow with good to strong lighting. See what happens.

Did that work for you? I tried it a few days ago and it seems like mine are just melting/blowing away even faster:confused:

I

I'll try it, right now I have them in the upper 1/3 of my tank directly underneath the return from my sump so they are getting good flow but I'll try moving them up higher, damn, there's $85 down the drain!!!!

When I say good flow I mean INDIRECT FLOW not battering them as if they were directly infront of the powerhead.

Luckily for me when I first got them it was a long time ago, and that was before all this CRAZE and HYPE for them. And didn't pay and arm and a leg people are paying. Shoot I can't believe I actually saw this polyp being sold around my area on CL for $25 a freakin polyp ( SERIOUS )

I have them in indirect but they dont seem to like that either??? Luckily, i only paid $20 for my frag but i've pretty much written them off at this point.

So I paid $85 with shipping, not terrible but not cheap either. I'll mess around with 'em when I get home today, hopefully I'll be able to salvage them.......in everyone's opinion should I be dosing phyto?

i have mine about 5" from my 2 39w T5's with decent flow. so far i havent lost any of them yet. they are still growing and seem to be doing great so far, but its only been about a month or so since i added them to my tank.

Here's an idea, maybe a Clear cage or sort with holes poked in for water flow but clear to recieve light for the polyp but can contain the polyp if it comes loose.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/12753/product.web

Just drill little holes in it. flip it up side down so clear is on top.
Your suggestion is one of those little gems that should be in a sticky thread, for quick access. :)

Hey Guys,
I will have to disagree with most of you on these african blues.
I received a small frag of them about a month and a half ago. 15 polyps or so which were barely glued on and quite a few floated around.
Reading alot of horror stories about these I decided to take the loose polyps and seperate them into 3 seperate tanks.
1) 30 gal zoa dominated. Place on sand with 4x24 watt T5s medium flow
2) 10 gal rubble rock bottom with powerbrite module only 4 actnic LEDS (no other lighting), low flow on bottom.
3) 26 gal cube 250 MH on frag rack high flow.

Makes no sense but I havent lost a single polyp in any of the 3 tanks.
Infact the ones in the 10 gal are doing better then the rest and have attached to the rubble and are sprouting off babies left and right.
The 30 and 26 have held their own, no babies but they arent dying either.
Where the rhyme or reason?

handfed do you mix your own water? how often do you do water changes and at what %?

i'm interested in seeing the subtle differences in your methods compared to others.

I do mix my own water.
I use hw marinemix , its expensive but Ive never had any problems so im sticking with it.
Do weekly water changes between 5-10%
Im almost embarrassed to say but the 10 gallon is about as barebone as it gets.
Just the actnic lighting and one small fliter pump with carbon and phos and thats it.
no skimmer, no fug, no heater, no anything. Feed only once every 2 week with a squirt of oyster eggs and phyto
Its a little experiment Ive been trying with the actnic LEDs
Only have zoas, mushrooms and softies in there.
