You need some type of current/circulation going on in there. Mine used to collect alot of crap in that compatment so I threw a small MJ pump in there.

Yeah, its cyano. increase the circulation in there. I keep snails and hermits in my sump also. Helps to consume uneaten food from the main tank that gets into the sump.
