purple up

id leave out the purple up reguardless of its age.

just get a good salt mix w/ a high ca like red sea coral pro

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you just need a frag or piece of LR with coralline on it to start growth. With that said, I prefer to go "all natural". I'm not a fan of chemically inducing any sort of jumpstart.

I think doing the basic things right will cover up any tank with coralline algae within a few months. Strontium dosing can be helpful though not proven. :worried2:

Ok thanks for all the replie, I was just wondering if it could go bad. I'm not planning on using it because I have Coraline growing on my rocks

i don't think it goes bad. it's not like some of the other chemicals that have to be refrigerated after opening. those you can tell they've gone bad when you smell it and it smells like rotton eggs.:eek1: i dose like a capful of purple up every week or so into my 55g just to help maintain mag, calc, and the iodine for the softies. i don't think it does much and chances are i will never buy a bottle again after it is gone.

From what I understand it's basically ground up aragonite in suspension. Wont help us supplament any parameters at the ph of a reef tank.
