Putty technique

I have decided i need to work on getting my frags attached to some rocks a little better (i have some PITA crabs that keep flipping the smaller frags over).

Just curious about using the epoxy putty to attach them to larger rocks. Would i just do it all under water? or should the frags and the larger base rock come out of the tank to do this?

Also, I'm pretty sure it is the same as the other epoxies but I have some of that Mighty Putty brand stuff kickin' around.. would that stuff be fine?

i use superglue. but most lfs sell epoxy... did you use this putty in other areas of your build, like securing rocks?

so i googled mighty putty as i was not sure what it was.. i would not use that stuff in my personal aquarium.. it looks like an item used for household repairs...

like i said in my earlier post, go to a lfs and get some... most petcos or pets mart even carry it.. or use superglue

I wouldn't use Mighty Putty either. The generic versions are 1/3 the cost. They are all just epoxy, same as at your LFS.

Ya I'll definately skip the Mighty Putty, like i say it's just layin around the house so I figured that if it worked I'd use it up.

I have had no luck with superglue gel. Looks like it holds but then a few days later I see the frag laying on the sand not attached to the rock anymore. Just looking for some alternatives.
I figure that the putty would allow me to mold the 2 rocks together for a more seamless look

If you Google frag glue, there are dozens of choices. Premium Aquatics has an entire page full. Using anything in your system which isn't inert, reef safe, non leaching, is a recipe for disaster.

The frag size and rock size would determine if I used reef glue or putty.

Good luck.

I used the epoxy putty from the lfs to both attach frags and rocks underwater. Works like a charm although not much working time - hardens fairly quickly to like a rock. The only thing is - watch your skimmer - mine almost blew up from excessive foam!

no skimmer to worry about. I'll be prepping for it by doing the bonding then my weekly waterchange right after to help with the crud

This is what I've been doing, but I almost had an extinction-level event in my aquarium tonight because of it (well, more because of my clumsiness, but I'm happy with blaming the glue).

I was trying to attach an acan frag (on a plug) using the glue/epoxy/glue combo that I normally do, and, for some reason, it didn't take - I pulled my hand away after about 30 seconds of holding it in place and it slid right off, took a nasty bounce off the next rock down and slid face down into my hammer coral. In my haste to separate the two, I brushed another acan frag that had been attached for weeks and it came loose as though it were just resting there, not glued down.

So now I have two unglued acan frag, an angry hammer coral, and slime coming up all over the place. For the record... nothing sticks to anything with that much slime. By the time I got it all organized again, everything in my tank was ticked - even the snails were looking at me funny. The skimmer went into overdrive, and I executed a 50% water change on the spot, trying to siphon off all the sludge.

Skimmer is still going bonkers, but things seem to be settling - I'm on watch, though.

Moral of this story: I haven't got any freaking idea how to attach plugs to rocks.

I use Waterweld and super glue gel. Knead the Waterweld, then shape it into a ball. I put some super glue gel on each side of it, press one side to the plug then push the entire thing onto the rock, works great!

ive used 2 entire tubes of superglue in ne sitting before.... and never had any issues...

Before you glue use a new toothbrush to clean the rock. If theres any kind of algae under the glue will attach the algae and not the rock and when the algae under grows the frag falls. I've used apoxie sculpt for bigger pieces and its worked very good the problem is it takes a while to dry but once it dries its like a rock.

ok for those having issues mounting frags , this is the correct way to do so.........
1) mix a small amount of epoxy ( amount needed is determined by your needs)
2) roll a dime sized amount into a ball
3) with the coral glue cap make a decent dimple into the epoxy
4) place a drop of glue in the dimple and press onto frag
5) make another dimple on the epoxy you just put on the frag and add another drop of glue
6) place coral in desired location of your tank

make sure there is no algae in the place you are wanting to mount the frag it will not stick scrape it off or use a toothbrush to remove any algae

Hope this helps
