QT in basement / less visited places + using old live sand

I have an unsold used 36G bow front and it will probably not sell at the price I want

Thinking about moving it to the basement as a QT. Don't have enough room in main living space. The upside to basement is that I wont have to haul water etc. Downside is that it is unfinished so I would have to make sure the heaters don't flaw , also I wont be visiting the basement too often so if something goes wrong, I may not notice it. Unless I am make it a point to check every couple hours which would be annoying. Anyone in a similar situation?

The other questions is can I use the live sand left in the 36G from the upgrade? It is been dry for the last 6+ weeks now and don't think any critters or parasites etc are still alive there. I may not even rinse it and just pour water in the tank and start a cycle. Let me know your thoughts.

most people like to keep their qt simple, including no sand. it's better to just throw in 2 or 3 pvc elbows to give the fish some hiding places. no sand makes it easier to medicate if that need should arise.

one downside of having a qt where it isn't easily accessible is that your fish won't get used to you moving around the tank as quickly. i've always had my qt either in the living room or right on my kitchen counter. my fish quickly get used to seeing lots of movement so by the time they are ready to go into my dt, they aren't the least bit squirrely.
