QT Question

Basic information: I picked up a tennenti from a very reputable LFS last weekend (the 12th) and it's currently in my QT where I'm treating it and a Royal Gramma with Paraguard. The Gramma has been in there since the 4th of this month.

The LFS told me that they keep a therapeutic level of copper in their fish only systems at all times and monitor it very closely. I believe them and have no reason to believe otherwise. The tennenti has been in his system for 3 weeks. I can follow that information back through different threads on his website / forum, so again, I believe him.

Now, my QT is very well established and pretty funky. I maintain a good bacterial load and have some algae and even some pods running around but they are few and far between which is to be expected I guess.

Anyway - my main concern is this: I know that the QT process is hard on some fish - tangs included - that the medications kill off parasites both externally and internally. Since the tang has been in their FO system for 3 weeks and has been in mine for a week, I was hoping to possibly pull them soon to add to the display.

Since Paraguard is an aldehyde based medication, and Paraguard is effective on both internal and external parasites as well as bacterial infections, I was really concerned that the medication could be wrecking their insides so to speak.

Calfo (or his colleagues) on WWM have stated that with aldehyde based medications that the QT period should be right around a 3 week period - 3 weeks and a day from what I can remember reading.

What are your thoughts?

Well my thoughts are.....I would still do my own thing reguardless what the store tells me. Even if they keep there levels proper, they can't add any new fish to the tank that is being teeated or you have to start the clock over. My guess is new fish are being added and removed all the time. That could be bringing in new strains with every fish. I am not sure about the long term use of Paraguard, might be a good question for Seachem. I would go with the long term QT 8 to 10 weeks and just monitor, keeping the water quality good.

I never thought of that - moving livestock all the time. Feel like a newbie on that one.

QT continues! Thanks for the smack in the back of the head ;)

My last fish in QT was a tang. I did start to treat him with Paraguard till I noticed an increase in ammonia. I stopped the paraguard and just left things alone for 8 weeks. He stayed clean the entire time so in the display he went this past weekend. I did treat with 2 rounds of prazipro and 3 weeks of antibiotics.

That's cool. I'm using Paraguard almost exclusively and have had great results so far. I also have PraziPro but I wasn't sure if I could dose that along with Paraguard. I now certain medications don't mix, but I don't know which ones can't be mixed.
