QT salinity

Is there an advantage to keeping the QT around 1.018? That's the salinity of one of my LFS and what they recommend. I know it won't effect ich, but is it effective against other parasites?

LFS typically keep lower salinity in an effort to reduce cost. I don't think 1.018 is low enough to kill any parasites but it won't hurt your fish. If you do keep your QT that low, i would probably slowly raise it to match your display before you acclimate them. I did hypo at 1.009 for 6 weeks and then raised the SG to my display (1.025) about .002 units per day.

Oh, and SG is sort of like global warming, it's inversely proportional to the # of pirates...

Unless dropping it all the way to 1.009 for ick, I don't see a reason to keep it at anything but 1.026.

Todd is right. The only reason to have an SG between 1.009 and 1.025 is if you're transitioning from one to the other.

Hey Solid 14th, you are out in the big world! When I get a new fish, I usually drop the salinity of the QT to the level of the water that the fish comes in; I still acclimate over the recommended period of time. I just figure that is one less stressor the fish has to cope with. I do water changes to the QT from my DT, so that gradually brings up the salinity to the DT level. By the time I'm ready to put the fish in the DT, it has essentially been swimming in DT water for the last week or two.

If you are going for ich cures, I would drip the fish slowly to 1.009. If you want to REALLY play it safe, match the salinity the fish is in, then, slowly, over 5 days or so drop it down to 1.009. When the fish is in 1.009 for a full 4 weeks, I would then bring it up to tank salinity over another 5 or so days.

If your just going to the main tank, which we all know is a big no no, at 1.018 I would do a two day acclimation from 1.018/1.021 and then 1.025.
