qt tank question

I set up a qt tank and I filled half of it with water from my tank and half fresh. I put a piece of live rock from my system as well. Would I still have to cycle it?

I usually start my QT with 80% tank and 20% RO, bringing the SG down to around 1.020, no rock just PVC fittings and a small PH. From there weekly WC going display to QT for the next 4 weeks. After 4 weeks if all went well move the new addition after lights out, no need to acclimate.

What you described above is really a 50% WC so there should be no cycle.

do you run Carbon in a small filter?

Nope just a maxi-jet 400, with the weekly WC water usually stays clean

Also, don't put the LR back in your display tank, at least not for a long time--otherwise whatever might have been on the things you are QT'ing will now go into your main display. Better not to use rock at all and just use a sponge filter.
