qt tank

So after my mishap I set up a qt tank that is kind of just sitting there because I cant introduce any new fish until May. Not sure on the exact gallons but it is between 5-10. Got a little cheap heater and hob filter from walmart. Just curious if this is going to be good enough for when the time comes or should I get something a little better. I have some rock thats been laying around for a year or so that I was going to boil and let cure in the tank since nothing is in there.

It's best not to put any rock or substrate in a QT as they can harbor parasites.

A small tank is usually just fine for most fish but clearly if you are going to have a larger fish even for a few weeks it's going to want a larger tank or it will stress. I do recommend putting a screen over the top to make sure the fish don't jump out and die while being quarantined.

I use a 10gallon right now but dont plan on getting any big fish.

I also use a small filter/heater and light. Only other thing is maybe an airstone for more water movement and air in the water, My filter was pretty weak so I wanted a bit more circulation.

Lastly, something for them to hide in when in the tank, PVC elbows work well, I just put 2 of my coffee mugs I never use in there and they liked hiding in them when I did water changes.

Here is my 10gal QT:

-10gal tank
-stand
-heater
-thermometer
-canister filter
-2 pvc elbows for hiding places for the fish

thats it. No need for a light. I put one of the sponges from the filter in my DT sump a week before setting up the QT for a fish to seed with bacteria. I also dose microbacter7 daily when up and running. 1-2gal WC each weekend. After QT period I break down the setup until next time. Easy and works great.
