About how long should it take for ammonia to start showing up? I have a 30 gallon QT tank I set up and put about 5-7 pieces of frozen krill in there on Saturday and nothing is registering on the ammonia alert yet?

No one can tell you exactly how long it would take for a tank to cycle. Some cycle in three weeks, some four, some five, etc.

to help expedite the cycle, IMO i would ditch the krill and get a large raw shrimp or two from the grocery store.

I just use ammonia to cycle tanks. Cleaner, faster, cheaper, and convenient. You also know exactly how much you used so you can consistently dose 2 ppm (or whatever) per day until the nitrates show up. Why would you want a dead animal rotting in your tank?
