QT w/copper or QT w/UV sterilizer?.

I´ll start saying that this is my first post at RC. Uhuuu!.

Anyway.. In the next days I’m going to use my QT as Hospital for my fish, and as far as I know, both treatment options for Ich (copper and UV light) kill the free swimming theront stage of the parasite, being copper the most popular one.

Sure it is because of the cost!, but i see some disadvantages using it, enough to think about an UV sterilizer as an alternative.

Here, some disadvantages of copper: (please correct me if I’m wrong)

1) You can intoxicate your fish very very easy.
2) Testing is required to maintain an appropriate level of copper, but all most every test for copper on the market "sucks".
3) Incompatible with hypo-salinity.
4) You are using a “CANCERÍGENO” substance directly with your fish.
5) Adapting your fish to this new substance can cause a lot of stress on them and make them weaker.

I know UVs have some disadvantages too.. like..

1 ) All of the water flow has to be passed across the filter.( but in a BB HT with no LR and good circulation it doesn't seems to me like a big problem).
2 ) heat ( In a QT with no powerful lighting for invertebrates and having good weather it seems controllable).
3 ) it will destroy all good bacteria ( how cares about bacteria! it is a HT with no biological system).

so.. am I missing something? why copper is so popular? I need some advice please.. my fish are sick and I haven’t had good experiences with copper, please help me to choose the right treatment.

As you may notice , English is not my native language. Sorry for the bad spelling. I hope someone can understand my words. :)

The three most effective methods for treating ich are hyposalinity, copper and the transfer method. Use of a UV device is not considered an effective method for lots of reasons .. most UV devices are sized to kill algae/bacteria not protozoan parasites .. that combined with the fact that the free swimming stage of ich is very short makes it almost impossible to use effectively.

Heres a good thread debating the benefits of UV .. might be of interest

Copper used to be the "favorite" .. but hyposalinity is the clear choice my many experienced aquarist these days. Easier to administer and less harsh on the fish.

Hope this helps.
