Quarantine of McCosker and Yellow Fin Wrasse

I am ordering one of each of these from Blue Zoo. They told me that in order for them to survive in my QT I need to give them live rock AND a sand bed. The live rock, I understand. But why the sand bed? I thought that these two wrasses did not require a sand bed to survive?

Any comments or suggestions? Thank you.

neither requires a sand bed nor do they require live rock. if you don't plan to medicate, you can do either/or but neither is required. these wrasses form a mucus shield when they sleep, they don't bury themselves. at least, mine doesn't. :)

Thanks. I think he meant that they need to pick at the live rock. I use live rock in my QT as in my display tank. It's only a problem when I have to treat, then of course, I kill the live rock in the process. But if no symptoms show on the fish, then it works well.

i QT'd my carpenter's wrasse without live rock or sand, basically the same thing as a mccosker's from what i understand.

i just fed him a couple of times a day, to make sure he was getting enough. he didn't seem too worried about picking at anything, and was in QT like this for about 12 weeks. i use a fully cycled QT as well, as more of an observation tank. if i need to medicate, i would remove the fish to a dedicated hospital tank.

sadly i lost him about a week ago. i think he jumped out. my DT has good coverage on the top, but due to some hang on the back stuff, it is not perfect, and i think he was able to slip through. so make sure you're covered tight!

i'm not sure about any of the specifics with the yellow fin, but the carpenter's/mccosker's are awesome fish. enjoy!

Nope, I didn't use LR or sand when I QT'ed my McCoskers, and I do the tank transfer method as part of my QT. I do provide a piece of PVC for hiding in.

My McCoskers is a pig - even in QT he ate until his tummy looked ready to burst. Still eats like that

As stated, neither live rock nor and is required to QT. Though if you aren't medicating, either would be fine. All they need is some PVC fittings to sleep in and a completely covered tank.

And care is exactly the same between both Wrasses.
