That is a question that only you can answer as many will say a "passive QT" is sufficient and if no observable disease is present then in the DT they will go. Others will say that only an "aggressive QT" can assure that the fish is disease free once sufficient time in proper medications has occurred.

Here is an article that may help you decide:
http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/diseasequarqt/a/aaaggressiveqt.htm

Passive Quarantine (six weeks):

•PROS:
•Time tested method of detecting problems.
•Less invasive (Treats only detected problems).
•Less expensive (not buying unused treatments).
•CONS:
•Takes six weeks.
•May not expose potential problems (latent external/internal parasites).
•Does not treat potential problems.
•Potential wait for proper treatment after it shows up.

Aggressive Quarantine:
•PROS:
•Short (approximately two weeks).
•Thorough (treats most potential problems).
•Less likely to pass a problem to your show tank.
•Takes full advantage of a Fast & Cheap QT.
•CONS:
•Potentially higher cost (purchasing a number of products).

So, with that said, what do I do?

IF I purchase a fish(es) from a quality operator such as Diver's Den where the fish are observed and expected to be disease free then I will QT for about two weeks for observation to confirm what I expect...a disease free fish. But during this time if I observe something unusual in a fishes behavior or physical issue then it is aggressive QT for 4-6 weeks. It will be aggressive QT for fishes from other suppliers (such as Live Aquaria's LA operations/or Blue Zoo) since the same observation and quality control as at Diver's Den does not take place, so it is up to me to be more than sure.

You cannot see all the pathogens on a fish by your eyes.

Most of us have ich in our display tanks and only know it if some stressful event occurs. It could easily be missed with passive QT.

From recent experience - aggressive QT of 6 weeks failed me for marine velvet (Amyloodinium) . I added an angel to one of my DTs after 45 days of hypo with 2 weeks of prazi. This was the first fish added > 6 months. Within 2 weeks I lost > 20 fish some I've had for over 14 years to a velvet outbreak. The list would make you sick. 6 fish survived.

Come to find out, unlike ich, fish can build an immunity to Amyloodinium, lots of data out there. At the same time, it does not prevent the parasite from living on the fish. More so a carrier state.

Even after chloroquine and copper, the surviving fish all still have it. I know this because I tried to add another fish and it quickly succumbed to velvet.

In the end, nothing is sterile unless it is dead.

RegalAngel,

For praziquantel, we dose at 2ppm (sometimes 2.2ppm) and then 10 days later, perform a 50% water change and re-dose. Another ten days and we do another 50% water change. We used to do this on a 7 day schedule, but found that some neobenedenia eggs were getting through the process.

Am I correct to assume that this is done with no GAC in your system?

Yep - and other people have knocked on the same wood and got hammered with HLLE. It turns out that the type of carbon used is one variable, as is the potential for export of the carbon fines through foam fractionation, etc. I have a study starting in the next month or so that will hopefully refine the cause and effect on this issue....until the conclusions are in, I won't use any carbon.
