Quarantine Set Up

Hey all,

For my QT, I am trying something new. I have been concerned that the QT filtration hasn't been properly cycled previously. So, I have taken the filter (an Aquaclear HOB) and placed it on my DT with two new sponge inserts in it, and I'm running it so that it can be seeded. I cleaned the filter thoroughly first.

My question is, how long would it take to seed? How can I test it? The QT is otherwise bare but for a couple of PVC pipes, a heater, new airstone, and an ammonia badge. The DT has been up and cycled since January.

Thanks, Martin.

i would give it at least two weeks. a little longer might be better.

you could test it by getting pure ammonia from either a hardware store (make sure no surfactants, colors, or scents) and using it to bring your ammonia up to 2ppm and then see how long it takes to process that in to nitrate. the typically accepted target is 24 hours for something to be considered cycled.

just a heads up, i've never had good results from those ammonia alert badges, so be skeptical if they're telling you everything is OK. trust but verify.

Thanks, I was relying on it too much during my last QT period. When I did an actual test, I was surprised to find I had ammonia in the tank. I lost a Royal Gramma as a result :( So I'd be better of just testing regularly I'm sure.
