Quarantine Tank Information

Is there anything special i should know about a Quartine Tank?
I bought a 29 Gallon Aqueon combo tank kit from Petco because i was told i just needed a simple tank, filter, and heater.

Im pretty worried right now cus when i first got my tank i lost half my fish when i pulled them in put them in the QT due to an ich outbreak.. I treated them with Hypo-salinity and many died for whatever reason.. Im guessing due to my only doing water changes once every 3 weeks and there were 20 fish in the tank? Its just a guess but id love to know the answer of course..
None of the fish showed signs of Ich except one of my tanks but i was told to pull all of them so it killed the virus..

I have a 210 Gallon DT and I also have a 29 Gallon QT tank..
I mixed my QT water by adding half DT water and half new salt water.. The saltinity matches my DT's at this time and im using this Power Filter 30 for the filtering.

Should i upgrade the filter to like a canister filter? How often should i do water changes in my QT? How long should fish stay in the QT? If i get a better filter would it benefit at all possible less water changes?

Im getting a Mystery Wrasse and a Blotched Anthias this weekend so i definatly wanna get this fixed before they start the quartine cus i heard they are very sensitive fish!!

Thanks for all the help and sorry for all the questions.. Its just a brain wrecking issue for me right now!

I would definitely do more water changes with that many fish in there. I also wouldn't put 20 fish in a 29gal tank. That would stress the fish out more then ich. How many fish u have in QT right now?

this was a very long time ago.. I didnt have fish in my DT for 3 months to make sure the hypo worked.. I do not have any current fish in my QT currently.. Im waiting on 2 more fish to arrive to go into the QT however im posting for obvious reasons on asking if everything is A++. How long should a new fish be quarantined before going into the DT if it looks healthy?

Hypo must be at 1.009/10 so you best be measuring with a calibrated refractometer. In general, it is best to observe before treatment. Get the fish eating before trying copper or other treatment. And I recommend only doing one fish at a time rather than 2 or more.

The general consensus is 4-6 wks in QT. Some people tx with Cu and/or hypo preventitively, as I do. It is likely that you will get a wide range of opinions however.
