quarantine tank questions

I'm curious to know what people do with their quarantine tanks when they're not in use. Do you maintain it like your display? Topping off water, maintain pH and salinity etc?

I'm toying with the idea of using an old 75 gallon tank as a quarantine tank. I think what I'll do is have it plumbed into the display tank (with valves so I can isolated it for quarantine use) but when there are no new fish/corals (and no sick fish from the display) I would let the water mix with the display tank to increase water volume... of course, if a fish did come down with something I would have a UV sterilizer I could use on the quarantine water to hopefully kill whatever the fish brought home with it.

Curious to hear your thoughts on my idea and what other people do with their quarantine tanks when not in use. Thanks!

I use a 50 for QT and it stays up all the time. I would NEVER connect my QT to my display. I have separate tools for the QT and the display. Only after I have completed the quarantine, does anything from the QT get near the display.

I break my QT down when I'm done with quarantine because I add things only occasionally. It's only a 30 gallon, though. I agree-don't connect your QT to your tank. You're just asking for trouble. A UV sterilizer is not 100% effective, so don't count on it to kill anything.

thanks for the input. I'm glad I asked. I will probably end up using the 75 for a fuge rather than quarantine... I have a variety of smaller tanks that I can choose from to use as quarantine. Thanks again.
