Question about a few items..

Hi everyone. I plan on buying these items cheap from this guy who recently had a "flood" and needs to sell these items soon.
FYI: I have a 90 gallon reef tank. (That i'm currently in the process of working on..)
1) "Kent Marine Maxxima RO/DI Unit" - I am paying a pretty cheap price for this IMO although I can't find an exact price check, I'm pretty sure its around 300$. What do you guys think, is it a reliable RO/DI unit? He used it for his 65 AGA Reef tank.

2) Coralife SuperSkimmer 150 Gallon with Needlewheel Pump - I could not find the 150 gallon version online.. ? - I am getting this for also a pretty cheap price. What do you guys think about this protein skimmer for a 90 gallon tank?


Also.. I told him to include some live rock (less than 2 lbs) because I really want to see what living creatures may dwell on it. I'm really bored with this empty tank right now and I want some action going on! How can I take care of my "live rock"? I know this is pretty stupid, but heck, I really want some type of "hands on" thing I can look at for now..

Well the skimmer your looking at is alright, personally I would go with a MSX200 or vertex IN180. Both of those have real good price tags and are known to be very reliable and do a good job.

If your buying an RO unit look at BRS Bulkreefsupply.com, they have very good deals on RO units, and filters.

I was going to buy a unit at bulkreefsupply but I felt that instead of the economical one if I can buy a unit that costs a lot more and is better. in general, I might aswell.

Regarding the skimmer: I looked both of the products up. Wow! Thats expensive.. at least its out of my budget

Trust me.. i'm getting these items for a REALLY good price.

The RO unit at BRS is probably the best quality I have seen for RO units on the market....Not sure why you would wanna spend more on a unit than you have to...

The question with a used RO/DI unit is how old are the membranes and resins. Does it come with a TDS meter? Kent Marine is a good name for most of their products, though I have never used their RO/DI. If it is a very good deal and is putting out 0 TDS water then I would think it was fine. But look into the BRS units and ask yourself how much are you saving versus getting something new, w/ new membranes and someone to call if it breaks or you need walked through installlation.

CSS are not the greatest in the world but they work OK. I don't think they do as good of a job as Octo or MSX.. but they do a good job.

The unit I'm buying costs only 120$ while the "economical" one there is 130 plus 11$ shipping..

So it actually costs less. I'm sure the quality of the BRS unit will match at least CLOSELY to the unit i'm buying.. but I really believe that my unit may be better. (?) Correct me if I'm wrong.


- Also, can you give me some advice on how I can "take care" of the live rock? Hehe

I can't speak for the RO unit but I currently have the SuperSkimmer 150 on my 90G and honestly I'm less then impressed. This unit has been going for more then a month on my mature tank and is all ways acting up (not that it doesn't work but it has a tendency to require constant adjustment). If you need something cheap and this is in your budget it is servicable but if you can get something nicer you will appreciate it in the long run. When using this skimmer you will want to use the drain hose on the collection cup and at least a 2 liter jug so that you have time to catch and adjust the skimmer when it goes into crazy wet skims. If you look on this site I'm sure you'll find a couple of others that will tell you this (stock) skimmer requires constant attention. After alot of work and a few stiff drinks I have managed to get my dialed in fairly well but still have to check it often.

As for the live rock 2lbs isn't much (if it isn't full of apitasia) and live rock can help kick off the cycle of your new 90 gallon tank. If his rock is in good shape and hasn't been sitting with no circulation you may want more, but if you have any question about the condition of the rock (if it smells bad) you want to clean it fist (killing it) and then let it cycle with the tank. IMO

Heres the exact quote of the seller regarding the RO/DI: "RO/DI Unit with NEW 75 GPD Membrane and a 50% used DI Membrane"

This is the unit I use and I could not be happier (Well, besides horizontal DI), I have known a few people that had a loose fitting on them. The guy that runs it speaks english as a second language but he has made right any problems I have known people to have. Not trying to convince you I'm just saying look around a bit.

For live rock i like to let mine cure in the tank on a new setup, as long as the sand is not in yet

Kent RODI products are decent, but often don't have a pressure gauge (an add-on gauge kit can be added), and use the old style jaco fittings (which can leak, especially when first set up), and a steel bracket (aluminum is better).

and that skimmer is ok it takes a lot of dialing in but some 300+dollar skimmer do too
