Question about aquarium stands

I'm picking up a 125 gallon AGA aquarium this weekend. It does have a stand to go with it but I'm not too happy with it. At home I have a Perfecto stand that will fit this aquarium but my only concern is that AGA has thicker glass and is a lot heavier. Not sure this Perfecto stand will cut it. Maybe I can reinforce the stand a little more? Anyone have experience doing this?

i highly doubt it will matter. Water weighs A LOT and that stand should be equiped for a good amount of weight.

I agree -- the weight of the stand will be insignificant compared to the weight of water, sand and rock.

The percentage of weight of the thicker glass is negligable in the total weight of the system. I would not worry about it at all.

I'll agree, to a point. Most manufactured stands aren't very sturdy. They're made to do a job and they do it. If they happen to get a little wet they tend to not hold up so well. They're made of particle board sometimes or at the very best, plywood. Ply wood stands aren't bad at all but I do think manufactured stands leave a little to be desired. A decent home made stand will, IMO, be much better than a manufactured stand.

Wow! I thought everyone would be telling me its too dangerous and not to do it. Think I'm still going to reinforce the stand a little to be safe. The I will start my upgrade from my 75 gallon. Cant wait!

I had the same stand you do in black.

I actually removed the back center brace and cut a portion of the bottom of the frame out so I could slide a sump in and out, and used the stand for 5 years with no problems at all. It's a pine stand, so no worries about particle board.

I'm sure it will do the job with no reinforcement needed.

well my 210g is sitting on astand thatwas made for a 180g but it is 100% wood (pine i believe) and no plywood or particle board.i honestly have problems believing some of these manufactured stands could possibly hold up an aquarium but they due(to my amazment)
