question about camera

I have a Cannon Digital Rebel and i was wondering how or even if i could do macro shots on it. (p.s what is a macro shot exactly? all i know is that is really really close)

Any advice on how to take better pictures would be awesome!

I will try to post some pictures of my tank even though the only thing i have in there is hermit crabs....

That's exactly what marcography is; taking really really close up pictures.
What kind of lense you have now? you can still take pretty good close up with the kit lense. Set your camera on a sturdy tripod and use the self timer.
