Question about dry rock

So this sounds like a dumb question i feel like but i searched online and couldn't find anything. is there a difference between dry rock and dead live rock? i also am wondering if there is a way that i can take the live rock that is currently in my tank and dry it in the sun to store until i can upgrade to a larger tank with a sump.

IMO dry rock and dead live rock is the same. The only difference to me is how clean the rock is.

if you want to store some live rock you can certainly lay it out in the sun for a few days to dry. I would then rinse it of good with a garden hose. I assume this will be stored for quite some time?

You could also leave it in a tub with a power head circulating water. topping it off when needed.

thanks, i thought it was the same, probably why i couldn't find anything on it. and yes it will be stored for quite some time. I'm about to have my first child and i just can't afford the upgrade right now. i purchased the tank from a woman who had surgery and could no longer do the maintenance. i know starting that the filtration was not good enough, an aqua clear 110 running carbon and bio balls is what she had for filter, with a HOB protein skimmer. my plan was initially to buy the tank and find a reef ready tank at a fair price and pretty much build what i wanted, transfer everything over, and transfer my oscar to the 100 gallon. so my plan now is to bring the fish and coral to my LFS and dry out all the rock and store it for when i am able to get another tank up and going

Well Congratulations.

Sounds like a fine plan. Whenever your ready you can easily cycle the rock and your back in business again.

thank you. but pretty much just jet it soak in a tub of saltwater with a powerhead and heater and do water changes, add ro water to keep the salinity and scrub the rock right?

If you wanted to keep it live then yes, toss in some occasional fish food.
