Question about filter media

I have a 28G Nano - the center chamber is for the filter media - BUT, if i wish to add a protein skimmer and a GFO Media Reactor should each device be in a separate chamber for the other?

I have not had an all in one setup, so I can't offer any help other than suggest trying the nano forum. Good luck.
