Question About Flame Wrasse Pair

Would a 42 gallon tank with very minimal rock work be too small for a pair of flame wrasses? They would be the only fish in the tank.

thanks guys!

my pair of flames swim all over my 120g all day long and when the male flashes he goes crazy all around the tank. I would say a 42 would be too small in my opinion.

With minimal rockwork, good sized sump, great filtration and most importantly a COVERED TOP, you can get away with a pair, or even a trio.

My two males are HUGE, and got that way quickly. When they do their dance, they look cramped in my 4' tank.

I have 4 female flame wrasse's in a solana tank right now with a 1.5 inch venustus angel. Not sure how long I would keep them there but they seem fine right now. I have a 240 FOWLR aswell I may move them into in the future.

Do you have a pair in this sized tank? How old are they?

don't have a pair in that size tank anymore, it was several years back and were in a 40 breeder. One was indeed a terminal male (perhaps one of the nicest ones i have ever seen) and the other 2 were fully grown females.....

but perhaps a contradiction to my earlier post ,did involve one of them turning into a male.......thus the new male flashed quite often.....but further from that, no real aggression with plenty of swimming space and no other fish.

I did emphasize covering (as it wasn't fully covered)....and perhaps this can go towards your other thread in "mistakes made"

Very interesting cwoods8! I have only kept them in a long largish tank and when the male was "in heat" (is that appropriate to fish?) and was flashing like crazy he went up and down the tank hoping to get lucky. Now I had him with three females so perhaps that had an effect on his mating dance. Yes, all fairy wrasses are prolific jumpers so yes that was included in mistakes made in my other thread. But you live and learn.

yeah, this hobby is full of lessons!!

ALL FISH JUMP!!! (Particularly Wrasses......except for the demonic C.Rosefascia that i purposefully went rimless for months)

thanks for the input thats what i thought. i cant quite decide what fish to stock it with. I'm thinking about a cardinal tank with a mix of threadfin, orange lined, and red spots or a cool fish pair. What is the coolest fish pair I could get for my 42 gallon?

You will NOT like my answer. The coolest would be a pair of candy basslets!
