question about gold stripe maroons?

Everything I've read says that they start out with white stripes, which begin to turn yellow after the fish is about a year old.

GSM's start off with white stripes and as they mature they turn into gold stripes. I got a pair of juveniles a year ago and over the course of the year their white stripes to gold. Now they are a mated pair and enjoying life

Are they supposed to become solid gold stripes? When my maroon went to a "she" it got a small hint of gold but never really was very noticable.

the gold wont take over the white in the stripes. it will be like a gold stripe within the white stripes and then when the female gets older 4+ years) the stripes recede and fade like mine. i got an old female and the male is still pretty but the female is loosing her stripes.
