Question about my skimmer, Vertex IN100.

I've seen a few of these skimmers in people pics of their set ups here on RC.com, and I've been noticing a difference between theirs and mine. On mine, the clear hose that comes off the venturi just goes up and doesn't connect to anything. On some of the ones I have seen setup, it connects to the adjustment tube. Does that make a difference somehow? Should I modify mine to do that?
