I have a 20 gallon refuguim on my 75 gallon tank. It has been up and running for about 4 months. I notice today it has a bunch of algae grwing like a film on top of the sandbed, is there upkeep for this sand bed, do I need to pick this film blanketing the sand out< I pulled a piece of it back and noticed it has a lot of red worms (I assume they are normal and prbably brissle worms and also various other critters and pods.

your fuge is doing what its supposed to do!
the algae is better in your fuge then it is in the display tank!... by manually removing it from the fuge you are in effect removing 'nutrients' from your system (the nutrients that it took to grow the algae)...

in our 50gal display fuge
there are types of algae that are never found or seen in the main dt... which is fine by me!... but the fuge is doing its job and once the algae is removed from there hence the nutrients are gone too!

good luck

Thats right, anything going on in your refugium is beneficial and the less disturbed the better in a sense. In my refugiums even some of the worst looking algaes make a great pod motel and helps to keep the display in a nice balance.

just remove it whenever
once a week or however often is convenient... as time goes on all sorts of different things will grow in there that wont be seen in your main dt... just manually remove as part of your regular husbandry habits... its not anything to get all worked about... we might remove ours 1x/mth.
