question about skimmate

I've got a 55 gal w/ sump (total water volume is about 100 gal). I just switched from a Super Skimmer NW 65 to an Octo NW 150. My question is this: The Octo is pulling some of the nastiest smelling skimmate that I have ever come in contact with. It's bad enough to make my apartment smell. I've got it skimming pretty wet right now (skimmate is DARK green and fairly liquidy). I know that there isn't any getting rid of the smell, but does it calm down at all? I'm to the point now that I'm going to have to get a plug in air freshener to help battle this. Any suggestions?
Cheers

You thought your skimmer poo didn't stink.

It should lighten up a bit after it cleans up the water. It sounds to me like the Octo is just cleaning up the left overs for the nw65. You could do a few water changes to help things along. You could also add a carbon air filter to the skimmer exhaust.

I've had some nasty smelling stuff in the past, but nothing like this. My tank sits in my living room, about 20 feet from my front door. It's like hitting a wall of stench when walking in. At first I thought it was the trash, then maybe it was the remaining smell of the old sump (went bigger). But after 5 days of constant fresh air being pumped in, it still smelled. I emptied the skimmer cup with only about a half inch of stuff in it twice now in the past week. It helped, but not enough.
Playa-1, is there an air filter made for that kind of thing.

I'm not sure, but I've seen pics around where carbon was being used on the skimmer exhaust ( riser tube ). You could also have the skimmate draining into a secondary container with a float switch and a little bleach. You would likely need a controller to effectively operate it. How often are you emptying the skimmer cup?

id bare with it...and try to keep it as airtight as i could :)

i think after a while itll lighten up

im sorta curious since my skimmer never pulled out so well.

Wow that is some smell then. Get some febreze that might help. Also and see if you have any dead fish around that might have gone up in to the skimmer and is just getting pushed around in there and is breaking apart that would really make it smell.

Maybe some carbon and even some baking soda near the sump? That's odd that the smell is consuming your entire house though. I get some nasty smelling wet skim but I don't smell it until I take the lid off...

Fabreeze?

I thought you could not spray airborn chemicals around a tank?

I so need to know if we can. My worst half farts smell from across a room so since I have a tank I have been suffering.

IMO I wouldn't spray it around my tank.

Same here, it makes the skimmer go crazy. I'll try the baking soda...works in the fridge, might work under the stand.
