Question about skimmer break in

I have a nuvo 16 and ive read so many terrible reviews on their nano skimmer that was designed specifically for nuvo tanks. I found a skimmer in my shed that i had on a 9 gallon a few years ago that worked very well.
I cleaned it and put it in one of the chambers of my nuvo and it fit perfectly.
The only problem is that it has to break in again and it filled the whole tank with micro bubbles. I didnt want the micro bubble to hurt any coral so i took it out.
My question is does the skimmer have to be in the tank to break in? Because i filled a little container with saltwater from the tank and put it in there to break in. Also will it make less noise once it breaks in i dont recall it making this much noise in my 9 gallon.

On a review for the IM nano skimmer guy said three weeks of micro bubbles stressed his fish so bad some died and some corals wouldnt open up

Reviews are fun to read but they often have no relation to reality, especially in this case, since there are so many things that can actually do harm such as water quality and there is no way to know what actually happened. Sometimes people make leaps of assumption and blame losses on one thing without knowing what the real cause was.

true. He probably had ammonia and nitrates through the roof and just wanted to blame it on his skimmer.

One more thing, all the noise this skimmer makes is coming from the air tube that is attached to the pump. If I cut the air tube to make it shorter would that reduce the noise? Also would that change the effectiveness of the skimmer?
