question about tang and qt setup.

last weekend I went to a lfs and there was a kole tang there. I have been looking for a good size fish to add to my 75 gallon tank. what I have read they do not get too big like other tangs do.

this is what I have in there now,

two chromis
true perc clown
small green clown goby
medium citron clown goby
neon dottyback
coral beauty angel

I know that tangs are a hot topic as far as minimum tank size but I think a kole tang would be alright but am open to suggestions.

also my reef tank is getting more mature now and I have not qt my other fish when adding them but plan to from now on. I have a 10 gallon tank from walmart and a hang on back trickle filter from a fresh water setup. as far as some stuff in the tank what does everyone run in there qt.

just some advise would be nice on how you guys run qt.

A kole tang will be a great addition as far as the tank IMO. Just check compatability with the other fish. The first ones are good, not sure about the dottyback and angel since I haven't ever had those.

Maybe throw in a large diameter piece of pvc for him to hide if he feels like it. Watch ammonia levels, start with tank water, and do a water change often.

what about a peice of live rock in the qt tank too. as long as i am not medicating it it would be fine right? if i have to treat with medication i can always take it out. just a thought. i am new to this.

i am going to look at the fish again tommarow if it still looks healthy i may get it.

Wouldn't hurt but if you develop ich, you need to keep that rock out of the main system for a couple months.

I agree with Roy (DrBDC) that it would not hurt, but what are you trying to gain with LR in a QT system? I really don't see a big benefit and could see some disadvantages. If you get a disease, the rock could be trashed before you caught it. You also leave yourself open to causing more issues if the rock is not cleaned properly and becomes a carrier of some type of "issue"

Here is my QT Set-up. Barebottom with a 4" piece of PVC to use as a cave. The Mimic Tang does use the PVC to hide in.... The QT has worked great for him and he will be moved to the Display after Christmas.

If you use a glass jar in there, and the fish uses it as a cave, your transfer out of the QT to the display will be easy and relatively stress free for the fish. Shoo it into the "cave" and hold a lid over the opening on the jar. Pick it up, you got your fish! No net required.

An issue with using a glass jar, fish can still see you and you can still see fish. There is no true cave feeling for the fish. The reason for the PVC is for the fish to hide. If he can see you, he will not feel like he is save. He needs a place to hide and feel safe while he is in QT.

I agree that you should not use a net to remove the fish, can cause damage to fins, etc. I drain down the tank and use a piece of tupperware to capture and transfer fish whenever possible.

well I bought the kole tang tonight. it is in qt now. it looks pretty healthy. they said it is not a very aggressive eater. he ate a little in the store before I bought him. so I plan on fattening him up before he goes in the 75 here is a pic
