I have a new 55 gal glass aquarium with a 10 gal sump and a aquaC Urchin with a maxijet 1200...I have two maxijet 1200's in my tank for circulation and I think I will get a magnum power filter for polishing...My tank right now has lots of brown algae on it(NOTHING but saltwater is in the tank, some debris of cc that I coudln't get out) and my back up sump(stores water changing water) is starting to get brown algae in it, should I clean the algae from my tank?or should I just put it in with the live rock?

You don't need the magnum power filter. In fact, you probably don't want it. I'm a firm believer in letting floating particles float in the water column (good for filter feeders).

Don't worry about the brown film, that's just diatoms. Clean it off with a magnet, and it will feed your filter feeders.

Have a test kit handy to test your water chemistry.

Be prepared to do water changes when the chemistry warrants.

how do magnets work exactly?

It is basically just 2 magnets with a piece of felt or a scrubber in between. You put one half on the outside of the tank and the other on the inside(inside piece has the scrubber). The magnets attract to each other and you can then drag the outside piece and the inside piece will follow it. This way you can scrub the inside glass without putting your hands in the water.

Just in case....this isn't something you make yourself, they sell them online for about 20 bucks. I just cleaned the brown off the front pane and it worked great.

I completely agree with Hdtran.

I am a firm believer of zero mechanical filtration, the particles can only help things live.
