Question about when to add Xenia

xenia are a cheep coral but not a very harty coral at all. if your tank isnt just right for them they with shrivel and fade away rapidly. They seem to like older tanks. Id wait but how long, who knows..I know beutiful sps tanks that cant keep them and I know others that keep them in there sump and they thrive.

We only waited a couple of weeks after the cycle ended to add a frag of Xenia. We got the frag for free, so no loss if it would have perished. It was a "test" coral... now I'm pratically farming the stuff.

Most softies are hardy. In fact I believe xenia don't do good in some SPS tanks because of the perfect conditions for SPS. Xenia likes it a little off in a way. If it has cycled I would just wait a week or two & try a frag.

I personaly have added zenia even before a tank completly cycled with minimum suport filteration. The result was basicy that it took off like a wild weed.

So if your going with softies I'd say Zenia would a great starter coral.

Thanks for the input, the tank has completely cycled, been done for about three weeks. I don't plan on adding any SPS, mostly LPS and some Soft Corals. Probably will get a frag of Xenia in a few weeks. Thanks again.

IMO xenia can be added at any time as long as nitrates are between 0-20. They seem to like med/high flow and med/high light for best growth and nutrient export. One of my favorite corals, a must have IMO

I waited 3 months - my friends gave me one, i had no intention of putting it in, but i did. It worked out fine, and grows like wild fire.

Mine seems to grow like wild but I have noticed if my nitrates go up it doesn't open fully I would put it in and try it Good Luck
