Hello all. This question goes out to all of you with led fixtures. Today i made a little led light for a pico tank i have.I placed it over my main tank with the lights out and it was like i was on a bad trip. The shimmer was very odd to say the least. The shimmer seemed to change color and didnt look natural. And the sand looked like a light show at a rock concert. Is this normal? Has anyone else felt the same way?
Thanks

Yea I have a diy fixture to and it does shimmer like hell, it doesn't bother me no more though. Maybe u can dim it if it's bothering u? Maybe some eggcrate? Your corals will like it though I guarantee

Since depth penetration probably isn't an issue on your pico, perhaps you might try some diffuser material (lightly frosted acrylic maybe) under the LEDs to soften the shimmer a bit...

I actually placed this over my 180 when the lights went out. No optics on it. I may play around a bit more with colors and optics but so far I am not a fan on how things look. My kryptonite candycanes were white, toadstool was dark. To me it just looked like a disco light show. One thing I was really impressed with was how bright 3 LEDs were.

What Brand and Wattage Led's did you use as there are many that are not for Aquarium use! I suspect you did not research this much?

What Mix of colors do you have, do you know what the spread on the LEDs you have is? how far apart are the LEDs? I have a biocube that I made a custom LED fixture for, and I get shimmer, but not that "digital shimmer" your seeing, mine is more natural.

One of the reasons I went with LEDs was for the shimmer. Granted the LEDs I have are a known wavelength and I think it looks very natural over my tank.
